What to check before bidding on antiques lots

Auction houses use "antiques" loosely: a general antiques sale often mixes period pieces with vintage and later items, so read each description for the date or period the house gives, and watch for wording such as "in the style of" or "later" that signals a reproduction. Ask about restoration, replaced parts and old repairs, and request a condition report for anything you are bidding seriously on. Check collection deadlines and delivery options before bidding on large or fragile pieces.

Budget for the buyer's premium too: UK auction houses typically add 15–30% including VAT to the hammer price, and each house sets its own rate in its terms of sale. Read our auction guides.

What counts as an antique at auction?

The word is commonly used for objects around 100 years old or more, but there is no single rule that auction houses follow, and many "antiques and collectables" sales also include vintage and modern items. Rely on the date or period stated in each lot description, and ask the house if it is not given.

Is it worth selling antiques at auction?

It depends on the piece. An auction puts an item in front of competing bidders, but the price is not guaranteed and the seller pays commission and sometimes other charges, such as photography, insurance or lotting fees. Ask more than one auction house for a valuation, agree a reserve if you want a minimum price, and compare their terms before consigning.
